Georgia History
Georgia is rich in the history of America from the Revolution thru the Civil War and integration. Slavery was not allowed till 1749, but quickly grew to support cotton and rice harvesting. Based on the 1790 census, there were 29,264 slaves in the state of Georgia, which represented thirty-five percent of the total population. In the 1800’s Georgia was still battling the Cherokee Nation and with slavery, the state was able to grow into an economic power in the south. It was Sherman’s March to the Sea that struck at the heart of the South and signaled the end of the war. After the war, Georgia regained its position as a powerful center for industry. Today Atlanta is a hub of commerce from rail, roads, and airlines.
